Gestational Diabetes

Today I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I talked with my midwife this evening but I knew earlier since Toshi had looked at my lab results at work. The glucose test is done by taking blood four times, once at fasting and then once an hour after drinking the 100grams of sugary drink. At two values being high they start to worry and changes are needed to diet and whatnot. All four of my values were high which was not good.

My midwife Joan made an appointment for me to see a nutritionist tomorrow afternoon so we can get that going right away. I'll also need to check my blood sugar and start taking medication. I was worried that this would meant that she would no longer work with me, as midwives prefer to work with low risk patients, but she agreed to co-manage me with the maternal fetal medicine people who I will also meet at some point in the very near future.

So, for now this will mean a big diet change. I will need to cut out sugar pretty much completely and all those carbs I consume will also need to basically go away. This will be hard for me as I love carbs and sugar but this is something I need to do for me and for the baby. Unfortunately this puts me at risk for future pregnancies and for later in life. I was already predisposed to it because of both grandfathers but now my risk is even higher.

More tomorrow once I've met with people and found out what I need to do.

Glucose Screening

I had my 27 week appointment yesterday and found out that my glucose screening came back high. This is actually quite common (as my midwife reassured me) and for now it just means another test which I'll do tomorrow morning. This time instead of a one hour test it will be a three hour test where they will draw blood four times. We are hoping that all of the values come back acceptable. One high means they'll check me again in a few weeks, two high will mean that I will get a nutritionist and will have to consult with maternal fetal medicine. So, at this point we will just wait and see what happens with the test tomorrow morning.

Thanksgiving

It's the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and this afternoon we are headed to Denver to see Toshi's family for the weekend. First of two big trips - Seattle in December before our little girl is born in February.

I am thankful for Toshi and for the little baby girl growing inside me.
